I’m back with another Monthly Spotlight and this time the focus is all on the family because this place is the perfect spot for a family fun night!
Or, as I sit here typing on Valentine’s (aka Galentine’s) Day, it’s also an ideal night out with your sweetheart or your group of girlfriends, too.
The place I’m talking about is Hammer & Stain, a DIY Workshop studio in Atlantic Beach that provides a space to let loose and be creative, and helps you take home a pretty piece of woodwork for your home that you’re actually excited to hang up and display!
In addition to the fun you’ll have, you’ll also love the atmosphere, which Hammer & Stain’s owners, Dallas Alvarez and Jamie Parks, have done an incredible job creating as they pour their heart into their business and the community which gathers there.
Here’s a little Q&A I did with Dallas and Jamie, and be sure to book your next night out at Hammer & Stain!
Alright, let’s dive in, tell me a little more about yourselves…
Our names are Dallas Alvarez and Jamie Parks. I (Dallas) moved to the beaches in 2011 with my two sons after I graduated from the University of Florida, and I fell in love with the area immediately.
Jamie moved to Atlantic Beach permanently in September 2016 to retire and fish every day. (Boy, did I throw a wrench into his plans!!!)
How did you come up with the idea for opening Hammer & Stain?
I have always been a “do it yourself” kind of person, and I love being able to teach others.
So after going to a DIY sign-making party for a friend’s birthday last year and I knew right away I wanted to get onboard. The lady giving hosting the party held it at a small museum in a small town about two hours away from Atlantic Beach. So, I invited the teacher to come up and teach us the basics about making custom wood signs.
I did a lot of homework on starting a DIY shop and found Hammer & Stain located in Gainesville, Florida. After talking with the founder and owner, I was hooked! I believe we were the seventh Hammer & Stain to sign on, and now there are 26 workshops in 12 states.
What has been the hardest lesson as a business owner?
Let me just say we are learning something new every single day! The hardest? Somedays the lessons we learn are mountains and some days, it’s a molehill, but we just keep going.
What’s your favorite thing about owning Hammer & Stain – Atlantic Beach?
My favorite thing with H&S is being able to watch EVERY SINGLE person walk out of our doors with a smile on their face and a project that I know they will proudly display. And that they’ll have the bragging rights to say “I made that!”
What are some of your favorite places to eat out in Jax?
We are too busy to cook, so we eat out A LOT! Taco Lu’s in Jax Beach is one of our favorites. Hawkers and Pho Viet in Atlantic Beach also see us regularly, and I can’t leave out Bongiorno’s Wednesday one dollar slice and beer.
What do you love about being a small business owner in the community?
I love being able to say that we are locally owned and operated. It’s a lot of work as well as a lot of fun. I’m enjoying meeting everyone and getting to know more people, and it makes my heart smile to see families come in, the phones get put away, and the laughter unleashed.
The happiness coming from the work tables is incredibly rewarding.
